Improve Your Digital Photography – Know Your Photo
Formats
Digital
photography has always been a great hobby, and recent advances in
technology have allowed many traditional photographers to move fully
into the digital world. Today’s digital SLR cameras are
capable of
producing truly outstanding images, and even many point and shoot
digital cameras can produce excellent photographs.
One of the keys to successful digital photography is a solid
understanding of the various file formats for this digital output. The
way in which digital photographs are shot and stored can make an
enormous difference in the finished product. The right file format can
produce stellar results, but choosing an inferior storage method can
result in severe color loss and an overall loss of quality.
There are many different formats used in digital
photography, but the
most popular and well known formats are JPG, GIF, TIF and PNG. Let’s
take a look at each of these formats.
TIF – The TIF, or Tagged Image File Format is another frequently used file format in digital photography and in industry. In addition to its use in digital photography, the TIF format is often used in many scanning operations. TIF files can be either compressed or uncompressed, providing digital photographers with excellent control over the quality of the finished product.
PNG – The PNG, or Portable Network Graphics format, provides standardized compression, making it a good choice for many digital photography applications. Although the file size is larger than a comparable JPG image, the quality and color ratio are superior as well.
